In the seventh edition of Motherland – the “Ghosts” issue – we explore the different ways in which belief in ghosts and the supernatural persist in India down the ages and today.

From exploring the subcultures involved in ghostly lines of work, to looking at how a land-grabbing scam in Uttar Pradesh has turned the unfortunate into spectres of society, to moving through Dileep Prakash’s beautiful black and white photographs of the haunting spaces of dak bungalows, to uncovering how beliefs in the supernatural have taken hold of entire communities across the country, and much more, Motherland’s “Ghost Stories” issue is a compilation of surprising, spooky and visually engaging narratives imparting contemporary perspectives on ghosts and other haunting phenomena.
